Honda’s green DNA – why Honda is the greenest automaker

Quick environmental quiz: Which automaker introduced America’s first hybrid vehicle, the first low-emissions vehicles, and the very first fully street-legal fuel-cell car?

The answer, of course, is Honda. Everyone knows that Honda is a pioneer in the development of more environmentally responsible automobiles. What you may not know is how Honda came to be an environmental leader, or why it continues to outpace other automakers in the race to produce cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles.

To get the answer to those questions, we need to reach back into Honda’s past – to a time in the late 1960s when air Honda pollution was becoming a serious threat to public health in industrialized nations like the U.S. and Japan. Honda engineers, witnessing this buildup of toxic pollutants, came up with the theme “Blue Skies for Our Children,” which spoke of their desire to play a part in creating a cleaner environment for future generations. With “Blue Skies” as their rallying cry, Honda’s engineering leaders took on the challenge of producing a cleaner-burning gasoline engine.

Clean Driving Tips

Wasting gas isn’t good for our planet or our wallets. The Car Care Council offers these easy ways to
save fuel:

  • Don’t be an aggressive driver – aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets
  • Avoid excessive idling – sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon – letting your vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient
  • Keep up with regular maintenance – changing your oil and replacing worn belts and hoses can help save money and protect your investment

Regular maintenance of your Honda vehicle at your Honda dealership’s service department is an excellent way to get the most mileage from every tank of gas!

Specific maintenance tips also include:

  • Check and replace air filters regularly
  • Keep tires properly inflated
  • Replace dirty spark plugs
  • Observe the speed limit

Honda Car Care Days helps to keep your Honda – and our environment – green!

As part of the “Keep it Green!” theme, American Forests will plant a tree for every vehicle inspection completed during Honda Car Care Days. Trees will be planted in less-developed areas in ecosystem restoration projects called Global ReLeaf Forests. Many of these areas have been damaged by natural or human causes. These trees help clean the air and water, filter polluted runoff, slow global warming and erosion and provide habitat for wildlife.

Our partnership with American Forests is a great way to extend our commitment to the environment.

By keeping up with regular maintenance on your Honda, you can help your vehicle run cleaner and greener.
